STEAMpop values the intersection between the Arts and STEM: STEAM.
STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Pop = curiosity; the spark emerging from learning by making
and the experience of creating something beautiful.
What We Do

We provide unique hands on, transdisciplinary experiences that show new ways of engaging with STEAM.
Our playful and creative making activities are suitable for a variety of audiences including
education, community and corporate.

We collaborate with exciting creators to develop high quality, imaginative STEAM events.

Who We Are
Melissa works extensively in a variety of learning contexts to enhance the status of STEAM.
She is passionate about exploring connections between imagination, making and mathematics.
Melissa develops unique STEAM experiences while also engaged in PhD research at the University of Technology Sydney.

Annette believes that integrated STEAM programs will result in new ways of thinking and an increased awareness
of the value of the arts in society.
Annette has worked in secondary schools and museums,
developing programs in art, design and critical and creative thinking for primary and secondary students.
She has facilitated design thinking programs for the corporate and cultural sectors.

Lisa Giles is our creative partner. Fascinated with how the material world reflects geometry through sculptural forms,
the Sydney based artist superbly complements the elegance of STEAMpop's creative experiences.

STEAMpop Signature Projects
Lumifold focuses on a mathematical paper folding pattern using the Origami Sekkei technique.
The Lumifold experience results in the creation of a stunning lamp which is an expression of
biomimicry, elementary symmetries and iteration.

The Binary Bugs experience involves makers engaging in a range of surface patterning and folding based on the
mathematical concepts of binary, probability and symmetry. The bug construction demonstrates expression of
biomimicry in the creation of physical beetle or bug-like forms. Depending on the making context,
Binary Bugs can be illuminated via LED paper circuitry or simple LED units.
They can be displayed individually or in a swarm!

Hungry Birds is where paper engineering meets mechanical movement, electronics and coding.
Hungry Birds enters the world of math-making interactive illumination! STEAMpop continues the flat to form experience,
encouraging your thinking hands to create a sensor activated nest of bird-like forms that glow and move.
